Over

I am Renske Decuyper (1999, Bruges, Belgium), a visual artist based in Bruges. I work across various media, with a primary focus on drawing and painting.

My work originates from the experience of being on the move. During car, train and bus journeys, as well as walks and bike rides, I observe the changing landscape as it passes by. The succession of buildings, fields, roads and other landscape elements forms an important source of inspiration. I collect these impressions through quick sketches, photographs and prints, which later serve as starting points for my works.

Rather than representing the landscape literally, I combine and rearrange different fragments into new compositions. The way a landscape is perceived from a moving vehicle—fleeting, fragmented and constantly changing—plays an important role in my painting process. Different moments, perspectives and impressions are brought together within a single image.

Through layered compositions, I explore how everyday environments can be perceived differently. My paintings and drawings draw attention to places that often go unnoticed and invite viewers to reflect on the relationship between observation, memory, and the way we shape and experience our surroundings.
